A pair of antique 19th century Verres Extra Superieurs binoculars or large opera type glasses, the barrels mounted with enamelled silver metal plaques stating that they were presented by King Oscar II of Norway and Sweden to Captain Chas J Killey for a \'noble deed\', and dated for 1897.

The glasses are made of aluminium or similar alloy and have leather covered barrels, a central focusing ring that extends & retracts the eyepieces, and sliding sleeve sun shades ? on the end of the objective lenses. The \'crossbar\' is stamped \'VERRES / EXTRA SUPERIEURS\'.

The front of each sun shade has been mounted with a blue enamelled silver metal plaque : one engraved with a crown and \'OSCAR NORGES OG SVERIGES KONGE\' and the other with \'Til Kaptain Chas J Killey For adel Daad 1897\' (roughly \'Oscar King of Norway and Sweden / to the Captain Chas J Killey for noble deed 1897) - please see all photos and click to enlarge.

Please note that although these are the size of binoculars, the view through them is more like that of opera glasses with a very narrow field of view (despite the large lenses) and they are not very powerful.

Size : Approx 17cm tall and 13cm wide when closed (approx 24.3cm tall when fully extended with sunshades).

Condition : One eyepiece has a knock (second last photo) which does not affect the lens otherwise good antique condition with expected light marks / wear / rubbing to the black paintwork commensurate with age & use. The lenses are good with some interior dust, the focusing ring works well, and the leather is good with a couple of light scrapes (largest shown in last photo).
