This Austrian charm has a beautifully enameled front with the phrase, "Er Sei Dein Glück" and a star which, when combined, becomes the phrase "this is your lucky star". The front features this oft seen phrase on a cobalt blue banner, with an orange-red star, and turquoise flowers with emerald green foliage. There are some hand-chased accents and embellishments as well, which give depth and texture to this charm. The front disc slides to the side to reveal the original photo insert of Maria Taferl, which is the most important pilgrimage site in lower Austria. After Mariazell, Maria Taferl is the most important pilgrimage destination in all of Austria. The insert is in terrific condition, complete with the thin glass or plastic cover and fibrous backing. If so desired, the photo could be easily changed to one of a loved one - simply use a jeweler's flathead screwdriver or bobby pin to gently lift the insert out. The back of this slider locket has been hand-engraved with the name of this pilgrimage town, "M.Taferl". The back is also stamped with the lion head mark, indicating that this charm was made between 1867 and 1922 and has a silver purity of .750. This small mark also carries the letter A, which means this charm was made in Vienna. The second stamp on the back is a maker's mark, but no further information is available on this stamp.
This 3/4 inch diameter piece is in terrific condition for its age, with minimal wear to the enamel and a nice, even patina. The front slides open easily, but also has enough resistance to stay closed when worn.
