Of extraordinary and delightful character, for sale here after decades in a NY life-long Chinese collection is a beautifully conceived, carved, decorated and antique surface ChineseMahjongGame Setina box or case from the1880’s to early 1920’s topped with carved Bear (Otter?) and Rabbit figures and branchlike handle, and containing 4 drawers, 3 with game tiles.

Each side and top of the case is hand decorated,including paneled, painted and carved workmanship. The four sides have low relief

carved and painted pictorial cartouche decoration and are dovetailed to the base.

The wooden case, measuring approximately10 1/4\" high x 91/2\"wide x 7\" deep, hasfour drawers withincontaining a total of 100 hand-decorated bone & bamboo game tiles.

Two drawers have been lost over time.

The bone and bamboogame tiles, approximately 1 1/8\" x3/4” x 1/2\" thick are in mostlygood condition. The contrasting bamboo backs and bone faces are dove-tail connected – a long time practice.

Painted on the undersideof the boxis “MADE IN CHINA” in tall letters, an export related practice begun in 1891.

Aspring isset into the back wall of the case behind the drawers.(1 missing drawwould have been a spring drawer.

Thecase has expected wear and resulting imperfections from age and use, missing pulls on a drawer,the front panel has a piece of molding missing from the back, a chip & crack on the front.

It is as-foundand as-is with the decoration still strong and the beautiful carved figural handle on the top is dynamic.
