Antique Civil War Era Cast Iron Table Mirror Widow\'s Memorial Victorian 21\" rare. Fresh from an area estate...oh if things could talk. This wonderful piece has been well cared for- so well cared for that when the olive branches broke at some point-probably during a move, it had been expertly repaired-by a welder ( old repair) which has made those weak points in the piece stronger actually. Cast iron Widow\'s Memorial frame- features an oval frame-open floral edge and a newer mirror, ( 3 loops cast in the frame on the back-strung with picture wire to hold the glass) being held by 2 little ladies in period red dresses \"holding\" the frame ( similar but not the same..dresses are slightly different) swing, tilt. at the base is an American Flag on one side, The Monument in the middle with a placard, and a shield with a Flag on it-holding a Sword, arrows, and some foliage-repeating the same foliate forms in the frame. On An Acanthus leaf base, with scallop shells. Bears the glorious patina of time, some gilding, and most of the original paint. Thoughtful piece-chock full Of Victorian Symbolism -about Valor,Love,Mortality. Red= war, strength, love scallop = rebirth acanthus = enduring life and was used at funerals, and cemeteries during the Victorian period hands holding the frame = sweetheart, male loved one Shield = to defend Olive Branch= peace, victory a severed branch represents mortality arrows = arrow of time, love, mortality laurel = triumph, glory, heroism, peace. I did alot of research for this piece, I revisited Victorian Mourning customs/rituals , which was a big deal, ( women mourned for 1 year and a day) and the departed were laid out in the home-prior to burial...sometimes for weeks . embalming was experimental..and during The Civil War - the losses were so great,it could sometimes take weeks for the body of a loved one to arrive, in various states of damage-and then another wait for the photographer to arrive. This piece is especially poignant - it was probably purchased around decoration day,and after the mourning period. ( during mourning-mirrors,pictures,reflective glass was covered in black crepe) Measures 21\" h 10\" w x 6\" d Mirror frame is 11\" x 9 1/4\" inside is 6\" x 7.5\". Absolutely wonderful piece of Americana,Victoriana and Civil War History, and you\'ll probably never see another.Check out our other sales and store for more wonderful things!
