Antique Uncle Sam mechanical bank patented by Shepard Hardware 19th century cir. 1886. Not sure of the exact year of production for this example. Most of the paint is in great shape. There are a few small rust spots near the base below the door in the back and a few more slight rust spots on the top of the hat as pictured. Rust is very subtle and might rub off but I didn’t want to mess with it. This bank was in the corner of my uncles display case in the sun room of his Gettysburg Battlefield home for over 50 years. The back and one side were in the corner and the front and other side were facing the sunny window. As a result, it appears the front and one side are slightly darker than the back and side that was against the wall. This was his fathers and he said he has never seen the key. Door in the back is locked but there isn’t any money inside to get out so it isn’t important. When Operating, place a coin into his hand, Press the lever on the side and he will drop it into his case. At the same time , the beard will move back and forth as if he is talking. Very simple operation and the bank works well. Bottom is cast \" PAT JUNE 8 1886 \". A nice early Americana childs toy to add to your collection.
