From a Northern California private collection An extremely rare 18th century white-glazed libation cup, with polychrome enamels added in the late 19th century. The form is based on earlier rhinoceros horn and jade prototypes, and features 9 chilong dragons climbing against a archaistic body incised with taotie masks around the waist and bands of plantain leaves on the pedestal foot. For a closely related example, see Christie’s sale 2427 lot 1770. A near-identical enameled and gilded example is in the Walters collection, illustrated by S. Bushell in Oriental Ceramic Art, New York, reprint 1980, p. 213, fig. 278. Condition: two rim chips to one side has been filled in and painted over to a professional standard (invisible to the naked eye). Otherwise, this piece is in good antique condition.
