Rare antique 19th century Chinese Export Famille Rose Mandarin plate with auspicious Wealth and/or Prosperity calligraphy written right smack in the center. Measures approximately 10 inches. Good condition with very minor lines to rim as shown and one area of possible infill to rim edge. Rings like a bell when tapped. Circa 1840 plus or minus a decade or two. Still retains one old collection or inventory sticker as well as a piece of masking tape. Would perhaps further benefit from gentle cleaning which I have not attempted.
Lot going on here...note the females grouped to the left not showing their feet or shoes which is Chinese custom and all with somewhat forlorn expressions staring at the two men ( showing their feet and shoes ) both of whom appear deep in conversation while holding some sort of Imperial edict. I believe the child being held by the seated woman may be central to the drama and some sort of decision is about to made regarding his or her future ...perhaps having been chosen by the Emperor to be a concubine or eunuch?It appears the mother or guardian of the woman holding the baby is having none of it and is about to draw a sword she is holding in her left hand....you can see the handle. Juxtaposed into all of this is the Wealth Prosperity sign.....and the woman holding the large fan who just seems to be an innocent bystander...or soon to be witness to whatever is about to transpire. Interesting plate whose meaning is open to interpretation. Nice strong colors. Weighs 1 pound 2.6 ounces.
