Beautiful example of 19th century blue and whiteporcelain snuff bottle. The classicMeiping form has a lovely, creamy glaze webbed with crazing that contrasts withthe white glaze that is used as a foundation for the decoration. The splash of white is embellished with atiny landscape that is rendered in an impressionistic style that brings arustic energy to the piece, contrasting nicely with the more formal shape. The streak of distant mountains seem to floatabove the simple hut in the middle ground, only prevented from flying away bythe pine tree that tethers them to the rushing stream in the foreground. Therich blue color has some of the blackened areas that may hint at a Chinesesource for the cobalt used in the glaze.

The stopper on the bottle is a red-orange translucentcabochon which has the feel and look of amber. The cabochon is bezel set in asilvery metal base, though the metal is tarnished and I have not tested it as Ididn’t want to disturb the patina. The spoon on the stopper is a dark forgedmetal, possibly bronze.

The bottle is approximately 2 ¾” tall and 1 3/8” indiameter. The piece has no cracks orrepairs. There are two small chips onthe rim and it shows normal wear from age and use. The stopper may haveoriginally belonged to a different bottle, but it is certainly also quite old,even if not original to the piece. Thiscork is a touch small for the opening and is not perfectly centered. This is not terribly obtrusive, but the buyermay want to have this re-done.
