This beautiful antique Chippendale style side chair or dining chair is made of solid mahogany and is sturdy with tight joints and solid construction. Based on the construction techniques, woodworking marks underneath, finish, upholstery and ornate carving style, it dates from the late 1800s or about 1900 and is a Victorian revival of the Chippendale style. There is no maker\'s mark or label. Overall, it is in excellent vintage condition with only a few very minor scratches or nicks. It was acquired from an estate where it was used as a desk chair for a Chippendale desk.
The chair is stained a dark color and the finish is in remarkably good condition. It has intricately carved details all the way from its pierced and ribbon-carved back to its ball and claw feet. The two front cabriole legs havecarved feathers at the knee. The back legs are squared and subtletycurved. There is a carved shell at the front of the seat. The seat is covered with a wool needlepoint piece with a flower motif and no stains. The upholstery is in excellent condition with minimal wear and only slight color fading. The set-in style of seat cushion is easily removed for reupholstering, if desired. The chair is sturdy and comfortable to sit on. The chair frame is 21 1/2 inches at its widest point at the knees. It is 40 1/4 inches tall and 18 inches deep. The seat is 19 1/2 inches wide at the front tapering to 16 3/4 wide at the back and is 19 inches from the floor. It is a exception piece that is sure to look lovely in your home.
