Here is an authentic Civil War era Calvary Sabre Sword with scabbard. The sword measures 39-1/2 inches long when inside the scabbard, and is 38 inches long without the scabbard. The scabbard measures 33-3/4 inches long from neck to tip. It is metal with metal rings. The blade measures 32-14 inches long and does not appear to have ever had an edge on it. The entire surface of the blade has rust on it. Everything except the blade either has traces of or is gold color, including the scabbard, handle, grip, pommel and hilt. I think it is paint. I think the grips are the original sharkskin (painted gold) but it is dry and crackly with some areas where it is torn near where it meets the guard. It is also still wrapped in its original twisted wire. The edge of the blade is perfect, and is not sharp indicating this was probably a dress sword or presentation sword of some kind. The basket/ guard is relief embossed with the image of an American Eagle, and thirteen stars for the original 13 colonies. It is bent downward. I don\'t know if it was made this way, if the soldier bent it on purpose or if it happened by accident. Also, the handle is loose because the leather washer type piece that is usually betwen the blade and guard is missing. The pomel is peened and has a shield pierced by a sword embossed near the top. I could not find any markings although something could be hiding under that gunk on the tang area because I only wiped some dirt off with a damp cloth. It is otherwise in as found condition and really apears to be all there, except for the leather washer thing. A magnet adheres to the blade and the body of the scabbard, but not to the handle or to the tip and rings on the scabbard. We do not collect these items, and we are NOT experts in the field.
