Amber Sharpshooter Glasses

c. 1860s

This type of specialize shooting glasses was used byCivil War sharpshooters during the Civil War and by marksmen after the CivilWar. They are truly an amazing piece ofCivil War and mid 19th Century history.

The frames are about 4\" wide with 5\" straight bows with the old-style \"eye-shaped\" bows (see macro photo # 4). These glasses have a wonderful patina and are in \"as found\" condition, with only 2 very tiny \"flea-bite\" chips on the corner of the lenses (very common). Great hinged bows and no side nose pads--all period correct. I would date this pair of amber shootingglasses in about the 1860s because of the eye-shaped bow ends and general style. They are unmarked, which was common for thisearly period.

{Please note that similarlooking “Civil War Sharpshooter Glasses” for sale on that have long,curved bows that wrap around the ear like aviator glasses date much later tothe 1890s—so don’t be fooled as that style was never used during theCivil War.}

These glasses have special, oval, amber lenses withfrosting on outside part of the lens to focus the sharpshooter’s vision on histarget and reduce glare. They helped increase contrast and improved the rifleman\'s concentration byblurring out everything except the target area. You can see this “focus circle” on eachlens in the photos below. Just as intoday’s amber-colored shooting glasses you find on the range, these wereespecially useful on hazy days or in poor light to help a marksman focus on histarget.
