Authentic Antique Hand Embroidered "Crazy" Quilt
This is an authentic crazy quilt which uses hundreds of small, asymmetrical fabric pieces that are traditionally Victorian type fabrics like velvet, silk, and taffeta. Then the creator hand embroidered the edges of each piece in elaborate, decorative, and different, beautiful stitches. This maker also used many different color threads and yarns.
Many quilts that are called "crazy quilts" are actually just "scrappy", quilters term for using fabric scraps.
This true "crazy" quilt is lined in a solid colored deep rose taffeta/silk (see 2nd to last photo).
It's 54 x 58. Since it's quite lightweight, it can be used as a lap cover, a wall hanging, or a bed cover for any size bed, including Queen and King where it can be centered (even sewn on) over a plain cover.
It's in overall excellent condition for it's antique age with a few of the silk pieces worn (see last photo), There are a few tiny spots with light soiling on the solid background fabric, and on one piece on the front, but I believe it could all be cleaned.
It might be that the quilt top was made long before the backing was sewn on by machine. There are still some basting stitches along the edge that were never removed, but easily could be (I'll leave that up to you).
