Native American Pipe Bags & Pouches - Cree, Cheyenne, Sioux, Arapaho, Crow, etc.,

Native Americans made an incredible variety of  pouches for every conceivable purpose.  Beaded and or quilled pipe bags were some of the finest items made.  Their Tobacco was sometimes carried at the bottom of the bag.  The pipe bowl was separated when it was carried and a thong drawstring tie was attached to the top of all pipe bags to secure the contents of the bag.

Pipe or Fire bags, used to contain sacred pipes are one ofthe most beautiful expressions of Native American craftwork you can find.Highly sort after as collectors’ items, original 19th century bags sell forthousands of dollars in sale houses across the world. Made from buckskin, and generally with long fringing at the bottom, these tall narrow bags arealmost always decorated by beautiful bead and porcupine quill work as well assometimes paint, horse hair, ermine skin and ribbons.

Although each bag is unique, the nationality of the makercan be determined by the beadwork found on the bag, as each tribal group acrossNorth America has its own traditional beadwork designs, and these designelements can be seen in all the beadwork done by that group. Beadwork fallsinto two main groups, geometric and figurative.

The geometricbeadwork designs are mostly to be found in the pipe bags of the peoples of theGreat Plains such as the Arapaho, Crow, Cheyenne and Lakota. Even within thesegroups there are distinct tribal differences, the Arapaho and Lakota tend tohave spidery geometric designs while their neighbors the Cheyenne often producebeadwork with bold stripes of color.

Figurative beadworkcan also be found occasionally in the beadwork of the Plains, where designssuch as horses, people and Flags can be seen, but is mostly to be found in thebeadwork from the Northern plains that stretch from the US across the Canadianborder and on into the Canadian woodlands.

Here the main theme of the beadwork is floral, and thisgives the pipe bags of people such as the Cree a very distinctive appearance. To make a pipe bag, you need to have a piece of soft leather such as buckskin, longer than your pipe stem, and over twice as wide as the pipe bowl is long. Thisis because the bag is made from one piece of leather stitched up at the side.
