Antique Cross Victorian Scottish Sterling Silver Blue Montrose Agate Hand Etched:
$182.23

This larger size cross comprises 6 pieces of Montrose blue agate set between a hand engraved foliate design, around the outer and internal edges of the cross. Beautiful pale blue Montrose agate is the most desirable, and sought after, of the all the Scottish agates. Marks: The cross is not hallmarked, but my jeweller confirms it is sterling silver. Condition: The front and rear silver surfaces of the pendant are remarkably clear of any dents, or dings. Unlike many of these crosses, I think this one is solid silver, not hollow, but I can\'t be 100% sure. There are tiny scratches, merely comprising general \'age patina\' on the rear. The agate stone sections are beautifully set - and are remarkably free from damage. The cross itself has a hanging length of 2 & 1/2 inches (~6.5cm). Description This is a very fine example of Victorian Scottish stone set jewellery, and it is in excellent condition! This larger size cross comprises 6 pieces of Montrose blue agate set between a hand engraved foliate design, around the outer and internal edges of the cross. Beautiful pale blue Montrose agate is the most desirable, and sought after, of the all the Scottish agates.Queen Victoria often made Balmoral Castle (in Scotland) her residence, and in doing so, made all things \'Scottish\' very fashionable in the late 19th century. Jewellery items made of Scottish agate were very popular gifts in Victorian times, to a sweetheart, a betrothed or a dearly loved family member or friend. This traditional item, may well have been a beautiful gift brought back from Scotland for a special person..!Marks: The cross is not hallmarked, but my jeweller confirms it is sterling silver. Due to it most likely originating from Scotland, where a lot of this style of jewellery was made, and hallmarks were often not used. I would estimate the pendant\'s age to be mid-late Victorian era (1850-1900).
The agates do sit up proud of the silver, but in such a uniform way that I think this is how they were set. There is one teeny flea bite chip on the left of the top set agate, (see photo), but only visible under magnification.
Dimensions: The cross itself has a hanging length of 2 & 1/2 inches (~6.5cm) including the silver bale. The cross is 1.25 inch (3.3cm) wide. It weighs 9.8 grams.Overall, a hard to find Scottish Montrose agate cross in such good condition, attractive Celtic cross - ready to wear and give many more year\'s enjoyment, and perhaps become a family heirloom to be passed on. It would make a most attractive addition to any Victorian Scottish silver collection.Tracked Shipping is $6.50 in Australia, and $25 to listed overseas destinations, by TRACKED airmail.
