For your consideration we offer this early piece of decorated redware pottery in very good, well-preserved condition. Dating to the middle 19th Century, this lead glazed pitcher has beautiful coloring that was achieved through the use of oxides. Both the inside and outside surfaces are a blend of green and orange with orange mottling over much of the green. Outside, the glaze doesn\'t go all the way down to the bottom rim and the underside isn\'t glazed at all. In addition, this old piece has a whimsical, slip decoration that encircles the upper third portion of this bulbous pitcher.

The glaze shows typical wear and tear with fine surface scratches on the sides from coming in contact with similar pieces back its time. There\'s a little loss of glaze on the edges of the handle and opening rim but overall, this pitcher is in extraordinary shape. Despite its age, it doesn\'t have any chips, cracks or hairlines. Back in the mid-1800s, redware pottery was used for common, everyday purposes; it was not considered anything special. Surviving examples are often found with serious flaws but this pitcher was well cared for. It\'s much heavier than it looks due to its thick walls and even thicker bottom. It stands 9 1/8 inches tall and has a base diameter of 3 7/8 inches while the opening measures 4 3/4 inches across, including the spout. The widest point of its bulbous midsection is about 7 3/4 inches. It\'s a quality piece of redware pottery that displays well and will make a great addition to any collection.
