Silver Dutch Windmill Wedding Cup - Just over 7 inches tall and about 2.5 at base. Very intricately engraved but not without its flaws. Expect tarnishing throughout. I have tons of photos of this so please feel free to ask for more. Came out of the estate of wealthy Long Island heiress Cornelia Prime. Artwork from this estate is shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
I will describe engraving and flaws layer by layer. Bottom tier of cup (base) has significant denting all around lowest rim. This includes very tiny tears in the silver. The engraving depicts angels including two sitting near what appears to be a barrel drinking? There is a makers mark of an \"S\" at this layer. In between this and the next layer is a seal that is raised. It looks like there may have been a mark at the center of that seal but it has rubbed off. The middle layer of cup has 2 lions heads. Maybe they both once had bells dangling? One has a circle dangling and the other is missing. Engraving appears to be two birds and a leaved branch. Olive branch?
Third tier of cup has an engraved border at top and bottom.
Middle layer before windmill begins is circular and feels a bit shaky. This shakiness gives lean to the windmill up top so it does not stand straight. Has two hanging bells and is missing another. Intricate engraving depicting a man and an oxen plowing fields and another man/animal scene that I can\'t make out as it has been significantly rubbed off.
Next tier consists of four upside down crown looking pieces that hold the windmill on top. Very tarnished. Also here are the stairs to the windmill and a \"horn\" coming out of it. Tarnished but also has some silver polish stuck on the steps.
The windmill itself is very intricately engraved. The back has engraving that looks like the back of a house. You can see bricks, a window and what looks like a clock. The clock may have once had hands. There is a piece on top that is slightly bent and missing the center top piece. it\'s cut in half. The next panel shows a woman? under a tree in a meadow? A bird is flying into her hand or she is reaching for it. There is writing at the bottom that I can\'t make out. Front of windmill moves and shows the makers mark \"S\" there is an etched pattern engraved and it seems as there may be other marks that rubbed off. Below this piece is a panel which appears like a house with wood and windows. Last panel shows a mountain scene of a farmer and his wife getting water at a well. I cannot read the writing.
The roof is a heavily engraved diamond pattern with an eagle on top.
I have gone through this panel by panel to do my best in providing an accurate assessment of any flaws and have represented them to the best of my ability. This is a beautiful and unique piece and I have taken care not to represent it as in perfectcondition. Please ask any questions you may have.
