Antique Early German Stoneware Beer Stein Enghalskrug Hessen c.1720s

Description: The beer steins made before 1800 are quite rare - at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated.

This beautiful stein was made in early-18th century, it is guaranteed old give ot take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of grey stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very traditional beer drinking vessel - a type that was produced for over centuries, from mid-1600s to mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in Germany reached the highest quality 1700s. It was relatively inexpensive but robust and was sold in Germany as well as in many other countries including England and American continent.

The stein was made in Hessen - a region in Germany with close proximity to the Wesrwald region. It has several stoneware-production villages (Dreihausen being the most famous) but the production in Hessen was relatively small. The early steins from Hessen region are very rare. This one has a very typical form called \"Enghalskrug\" or \"thin neck stein\" but this particular form of Enghalskrug - with a longer neck and extended base - was made in Hessen only.

Is is made of a grey clay similar to Westerwald decorated with embedded lines made with a special instrument into a wet clay. There is one band at the very top of the neck made with the cobalt-blue glaze

The lid is pewter - this indented shape and plain thumblift are another sigh of early-1700s for the Hessen stoneware.

The stein is in excellent shape - there are some minor chipping on the foot edge, but no hairlines, cracks or repairs. It\'s a perfect example of almost 300 years old stoneware drinking vessel in very rare undamaged condition.

The stein is standing 9.5\" tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1L capacity. I guarantee the authencity.
