$270.00

Beautiful silk ongauze sampler, though undated and unsigned, the style of stitch work wouldindicate this piece dates to c.1845 or slightly earlier. The upper section ofthe gauze is stitched with a central plaque containing the following shortverse with a central bird in flight below a star to his left and right:

Cease fond fluttering heart, struggling toget free

Thou and the world must part however hard itbe

The lower section ofthe gauze is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge with Adam and Evestanding beneath its fruit laden branches, a small fruit bush at their sidewith a bird catching an insect above each. The foliage of the Tree has aheralding cherub on either side with a farmer by the left cherub and his wifeby the right, each with a crook in hand. The whole thing is then surrounded bya deep floral border.

The gauze hasoverall discoloration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places andthe colors of the thread are good. The edges of the gauze have been cut at somepoint of time which has resulted in some minor fraying. Sampler is mounted in a beautiful antique oakframe. Sampler measures 17” x 14”. Frame measures 21” x 18”. PayPal only.
