A rare & stunning Art Nouveau 9ct Gold Suffragette Holbein (Pendant/Brooch) that dates to c1910 and, which is in fine original condition as shown(please seethe detailed close-up photographs provided, which form an integral part of theitem\'s description).
This wonderful Pendant/Brooch has been beautifully crafted in an Art Nouveau inspired \'Openwork Stylized Heart Shape\' below a Pearl set foliate surmount. The Holbein has as it\'s focal-point a millegrain set oval Amethyst (approx\' 8.5mm by 5.5mm) surrounded by floral & foliate decoration set with Peridots & fine Seed Pearls.The Pendant/Brooch terminates with a drop set with a smaller oval Amethyst, which is similarly set. The purple of the Amethysts, the green of the Peridots & the white of the Pearls reflect the colours of the Suffragette Movement, making this an important & highly collectable Suffragette Jewel - an eminently wearable yet important piece of social history.
This finest quality Suffragette Pendant/Brooch, which weighs 5.8 grams, has the following dimensions: it is approx\' 5.4cms long (including the bail) and approx\' 3.0cms wide. Typical of the period and as shown it is stamped on the reverse with the maker\'s mark \'TH 59\' togetherwitha fineness stamp \'9ct\' confirming that it is made from solid 9ct Gold as described.
Overall this stunning Suffragette Jewel is in great condition with only wear, as shown, commensurate with age.Crafted as a Holbein thisis such a versatile piece of jewellery; being capable of being worn either as a Brooch or as a Necklace - just asyoudesire (it only requires the addition of a chain should you wish to wear it as a Pendant).

It only started to be produced from around 1909 and was retailed by stores such as Liberty & Co to enable women to show their support of the Woman\'s Suffrage Movement.Despite many claims that Victorian Jewellery with purple, green and white gems is Suffragette Jewellery that is in fact not correct, as the Women\'s Social & Political Union under Emmeline Pankhurst only devised the colourschemeassociate with Suffragette Jewellery in 1908. The colours were purple (for dignity), white (for purity) and green (for hope) and Emmeline described their meaning in 1908 thus: Purple…is the royal colour…It stands for the royal blood that flows in the veins of every suffragette, the instinct of freedom and dignity…white stands for purity in private and public life…green is the colour of hope and the emblem of spring.
