<img Cherry Cased Table Clock by Louis Japy & Fils c.1830
Lovely Country French clock with original finish constructed in solid cherry wood which has developed a rich color and patina. There are delicate gold leaf decorations to the front of the case. There is some fading and a bit of wear to the clock which one would expect in an original clock that is 185 years old. This clock was made in the Franche-Compte which is normally associated with the \"Comtoise\" or the floor standing \"prayer clocks\".
The round enamel has Roman chapters and is signed by the maker. There are some chips to the dial which can be seen in the high resolution close up photos. The dial is very presentable. The polished steel hands are beautifully cut (with a repair to the tail of the minute hand). The black japanned dial surround has gilt decorations and a rural Country French scene surrounding the pendulum aperture. The pendulum is visible through this aperture. (I had trouble photographing the front of the clock because of reflection in the glass, you get a better picture of the beautiful dial in the 2nd photo).
Original iron 8 day movement. The interesting originalmovement having steel plates and brass wheels. It strikes the hours and halves on a coil gong with rack striking. It has silk suspension and recoil anchor escapement and a lovely pierced pendulum. I don\'t know when the clock was last cleaned, but I have oiled the movement and it\'s running well and keeping beautiful time.
This is a very early interesting example by Japy, the use of steel plates to the movement and timber to the case is highly unusual. There are four round threaded holes under the clock in the corners whichwould have been turned feet. The glass is original and wavy.
The clock runs and keeps perfect time.
The clock comes with a correctly fitting winding key, it\'s ready to wind up and enjoy.
According to Tardy, the father Frederic Japy established his clockworks at Beaucourt in 1771. He associated himself with his sons Fritz, Louis, and Pierre in 1807. Japy received a gold medal a few years later (1849) at the Great Exposition of Paris.
The firm of Japy became the largest manufacturer of movements, clocks, and ebauches of watches in France later on in the 19th century. For a detailed history of Japy and the Franche Compte, see Chapter VI in Carriage Clocks by Allix & Bonnert.It\'s exciting to see such an early example of this famous familys work.
