Antique Georgian Mourning Hair Work Miniature Framed Picture c. 1823 Sentimental:
$695.00

Description: A phenomenal piece of Georgian Era (1714-1837), mourning, hair art. The scene is made almost entirely of human hair with the exception of hand-drawn lines, some seed pearls, and the mother-of-pearl tombstone which has the following funerary inscription:J.IN’T HOUTv.d. Plaat.Geb. 5 Jan. 1823 (end). The gravestone is set in a cemetery and is surrounded by incredible hairwork, forget-me-nots and other flowers set with seed pearls and foliage including a weeping willow tree. The cemetery gate and a mausoleum appear in the background. The hairwork is incredible. If you study the photos, you can see that the hair art is three-dimensional and also very intricate. I think this is a German piece based on the inscription \"Geb. 5 Jan. 1825\" where \"geb\" in this case refers to the date of death or \"died,\" etc, but the name seems Dutch to me, possibly “van der Plaat.” The hairwork and other materials are mounted to a board with a dark background (I\'m not sure what it\'s made from but possibly paper or wood). The frame is a dark brown or black color with a gold inner border around the glass which is convex. I love the old bubble glass pieces, BUT they are so hard to photograph because the glass is so reflective, so please excuse any light marks. the back appears to have the original backing which is a hard material, possibly coated wood. It has a hanger, so it\'s ready to go.
Background: This piece is a memorial for J\'in\'t Hout v.d. Plaat. Most likely, the hair is from this person and was taken after they died and made into this piece of art. Hair work, mourning miniatures such as this one were one example of hair work art made by those in mourning to memorialize the dead. Hair jewelry is another example. These types of hair work miniatures are rare, but those I\'ve seen are from the 19th century during the Georgian and Victorian eras.
Materials: Human hair, mother-of-pearl, seed pearls, paper, ink, wood, glass.
Measurements: Frame: 7.5\" tall, 6.5\" wide, and a depth of roughly 1.25\" from the back to the top of the glass dome. Miniature/frame inner measurements: 4.5\" tall x 3.5\" wide.
Weight: Approximately 10 ounces.
Date estimate: c. 1823.
Origin: European. Most likely German.
Condition: Very good condition with wear in keeping with age and use. The hairwork is intact and the frame is in good, antique condition with normal wear such as a few scuffs here and there. The glass is intact with no chips or cracks. There is some dust on the inside and the outside may do with a gentle cleaning.
