Antique Etched German Beer Stein by Marzi and Remy Drinking Cavalier #979 c.1900 #1

Description: This old stein was made by Marzi and Remy - one of the oldest and and famous stein making factories located in Hohr-Grenzhausen.

The stein was manufactured in late 1890s - early 1900s and is made in \"etched\" technique - the contours of the drawing look like they are engraved - thus creating a very attractive decoration. The etched technique is usually assosiated with Mettlach stein but there were some other manufacturers that used this technology. It was very labor-intensive and expensive but produced excellent results. Etched Marzi and Remy steins are quite rare. The colors were painted by hand as opposed to Mettlach where it was more industrialized with differently colored clay.

The stein shows a drinking scene from Renaissance period with a cavalier toasting and the innkeeper and maid serving him. The inscription on the bottom reads:

Füllen und leeren,
nimmer entbehren. Filled then emptied,
but never deprived.

The stein has a beautiful pewter lid, very ornate. There is no manufacturer\'s mark, only 979 model number. But this is well known stein by Marzi and Remy - it was present in many catalogs. It is also iteresting to know that this stein was made with four different inscriptions. Please note - I have another one - exactly the same 979 but with a different saying at the bottom.

It is 8\" tall to the top of the finial, 0.4 L capacity. Very nice and impressive drinking vessel. Excellent flawless condition with only minor paint wear.

Condition: Excellent (minor paint wear) Year: late 1890s - early 1900s Country: Germany Maker: Marzi and Remy Height: 8 in. Materials: pottery
