If you\'re a collector of Christmas figures and delight in building or viewing Putzes (miniature landscapes originally erected in the homes of Pennsylvania Dutch, which was one of the Christmas traditions that they brought over from Germany), then you know you\'ve found something special in this herd of woolly sheep! Standing between 2\" and 2.5\" tall, each sheep has a ceramic head with hand-painted red lips and nose, and black eyes. They stand on four sturdy wooden stick legs, painted white with black hooves. Each has a paper collar, one of which is stamped \"GERMANY.\" Two other sheep have \"GERMANY\" stamped on a back leg. The two smallest sheep are unmarked, which is typical for the small ones. Their felt(?) bodies are all appropriately piled, which is typical for sheep of this age. Overall these sheep are in very good antique condition, with the fading and wear typical of being displayed in a Putz each holiday season for many years. They date to the early twentieth century. We recently acquired a large herd of sheep from a family that had displayed them in a miniature landscape each Christmas, and then carefully packed them away. They are now downsizing their collection, and so we have the opportunity to pass them along to you!
