Antique German Porcelain Beer Stein Bicycle Bike Handpainted Highwheel c.1880s
Description: This old porcelain German stein was made in late-1880s - early 1890s. It is dedicated to the sport of cycling and showing several scene of high-wheel biking with some romantic and humorous theme. The front medallion shows a Cupid on a high wheel holding a shield with inscription: \"Deutscher Radfahrer Bund\" - \"German Bicycle Union\". The inscription under the shield reads: \"All Heil\" - that was the official motto of the sports of cycling in old Germany. The verses below and above the shield say:
\"Nichts Schonres kann es auf der Welt
Fur menschenkinder geben
Als in der Tasche etwas Geld
Ein frohlich Radferleben\"
\"Nothing is better for a human being than some money in his pocket and a cheerful cycling life\"
Das Amor Bundesmitglied ist
In jeden Radfahrorden
Das weiss ja jeder Bicyclist
Und ist es drum geworden.\"

The decoration is handpainted over transfer outline - a fantastic decoration job. Nice heavy cast ornate pewter lid. There is a lithophane in the bottom - a picture that is visible against the light - with a flirting couple in a tavern. The bottom show a mark - this is the decorator\'s mark, not the porcelain manufacturer\'s. The porcelain manufacturer\'s provided mostly blank stein for the decoration companies. This one did a great job.
Very impressive and beautiful early example of sports memorabilia. This is a remarkably interesting and unique stein from the beginning of the bicycle era.
The stein is in excellent condition - there is no cracks or chips, lid is sitting tight. It is 9\" tall, 0.5L capacity.
