Ornately carved in the Black Forest style. Decorated with alternating scrolls and foliage. Centered by a hand carved mascaron figure. Perhaps the head of a Green Man or Satyr surrounded by foliage, with characteristic features including pointed ears, swooping mustache and curling beard. Finely detailed and skillfully hand carved. His face is set in a jovial expression, with mouth open in a friendly smile showing a row of small teeth. The decorative portion is entirely carved from a single piece of dark wood (perhaps Walnut?) and exhibits gorgeous detail and dimension. The flat mount on top having a serpentine edge, trimmed with a gadroon and beveled border. A beautiful piece and ready to hang. In very good condition with general wear. A couple of age splits to the right scroll and to a leaf towards the bottom, neither are too noticeable as they blend in well with the intricate carving. Measures 11 5/8\" height x 11 3/4\" width x 6\" deep.
