This is a rare antique pressed glass compote made by Henry Greener of the Wear Flint Glass Works located in Sunderland, in the North East of England. The piece was made as a commemorative for wealthy American philanthropist George Peabody, who moved to London and funded housing and education for the poor. The bowl is decorated with his name raised in the glass \"George Peabody\" as well as stars and thin horizontal lines, perhaps a reference to the stars and stripes of Peabody\'s country of origin. It was made with a four part mold. The interior side of the bowl has a raised British registry lozenge indicating a registration date of December the 7th, 1869 on it - the records show that design No. 236921 was registered on that date by Henry Greener. The piece measures 4 ½\" in height and 5 ¾\" in diameter at the top - it weighs 1 lb and 2 oz. It is in very good condition with a few tiny fleabites to the interior of the raised rim on the underside of the base, really minor and shouldn\'t bother anyone at all as they aren\'t visible unless one picks up the piece and closely inspects the underside of the base. Other than this, the bowl is a little askew on the base, but this is original to the manufacture of the piece and is kind of an interesting aspect of the piece. Greener\'s quality tended to be less consistent than that of Sowerby and Davidson, so these types of defects or inattention to finishing is normal for Greener. Henry Greener is an important figure in the British glass industry, having apprenticed at Sowerby and establishing his own business at the important Wear Flint Glass works, which was bought from the family after Greener\'s death by James Augustus Jobling. Examples of Greener pressed glass are rather rare as output was much less prolific than Sowerby or Davidson. This compote features interesting form and detail….excellent nice display piece and a great addition to a pressed glass collection.
