Hi Everyone, Thank you very much for both your time and consideration, I most certainly appreciate it. Firstly, I would like to strongly urge you to watch the video I posted on you tube, I highly recommendyou take a few minutes of your valuable time to watch the video as i believe it will answer any and all questions you may have pertaining to the condition of the box itself. It is very informative and forthcoming as far as the condition of the box and most importantly, it gives you an audible example of exactly what you may be considering to purchase, trust me, it\'s well worth your time. Just copy and paste the link into your browser and enjoy. Unfortunately, I had to shoot the video in 2 parts, at the end of part 1, you\'ll notice, I realize that I failed to wind the movement so, it did not play on command, had to stop and shoot part 2, sorry...I\'m a little distracted these days.
OK, I believe this box\'s original intended purpose was to serve as a humidor and It was later fitted and equipped with a very nice Musical movement. Mfg by the one and only Reuge, Swiss made, High quality and very precise engineering methods are employedby Reuge, hands down, #1 in musical movements for a century or more. The movement plays three separateverses or versions of \"Clair de lune\" by De Bussey, some folks really love that melody, me, it doesn\'t exactly blow my skirt up but, to each their own I guess. I have not done any maintenance to the movement, I simply wound it up and listened to it so I can accurately describe my findings to you. Box dates circa 1880-1920 perhaps, repairmannotes on the bottom indicate the movement was installed in 1969 which I am confident it is the case as the design and characteristics of the movement are period correct. 1970\'s and 80\'s, the plastic decades right? Wish I invested in stocks for polymer at that time.
The movement plays and sounds just fine with one exception that I do not really care for, the governor assembly has a plastic wheel/gear on the arbor fed by the endless or worm gear. I have absolutely no confidence in those plastic gears, If I were keeping the box, I would change out the entire governor assembly with a new part. I believe I can hear suttle noise coming from it, it may just need to be serviced or re adjusted but, if it were me, I\'d change out the entire assembly with a steel gear/wheel.
The box itself is gorgeous, the diversity of woods used is quite impressive, smothered in burl wood, walnut for sure and either maple or buckeye burl wood perhaps over the rest, inlay work on top of the lid, I believe tiger maple was used on the inside or as a base wood maybe, very pretty box. Dark red highlights hand painted on the edges that makes a very nice contrast. The video can tell a much better story than I can, I strongly recommend and urge you to take the time to watch it, very informative and more than likely will answer any questions or concerns you may have.
