Here is a wonderful Japanese doll tableau depicting the folk tale of the Tongue Cut Sparrow and the Kind Man. The scene has two dolls mounted on a painted black lacquer base with a sparrow dressed in a silk brocade kimono and the farmer carrying the gifted treasure chest on his back.
The base measures about 9 inches across and the bamboo tree stands about 8 inches tall, including the base. The original wooden box is included and there is a paper painting in the bottom of the box.
The farmer appears to have once been holding something but that is no longer present. His face is in good general shape with a slight amount of chipping around his neck. The sparrow is in good shape but please look at the photographs carefully as I may not know if something is missing.
With this piece I am fairly certain that it is made in the 1930s based on research and my own knowledge of my grandmothers estate from which this comes. She lived in Japan between 1900 and the late 1930s and she was an avid collector of dolls for the Girl\'s Day Festival. Quite often the dolls would represent a folktale such as this one.
