STUNNINGANTIQUE JAPANESE LACQUEREDJUBAKO STACKING BOX

Edo Period (1800s)

Spectacular, hand lacquered Jubakoin the Japanese naturalist aesthetic ofthe age of the Shogun and Samurai. Featuringsublime layers of heavily hand applied lacquer carefully crafted to resemble flowing wood grain patterning. The texture is visually exquisite and most tactilely pleasing with ridges and simulated knots covering the entire surface. The color is also magnificent, a tasteful shade of deep, dark red with subtle variations within the undulating surface treatment.

The artisan who created thissuperb jubako was a master craftsman who knew how to manipulate the urushi lacquer over a wooden base in a most lifelike manner. The interiors of each compartment are completely covered in vibrant warm vermilion lacquer which sets thedesign off in spectacular fashion.See photographs for all of themeticulous detail.

Traditionally used to carry delicacies to special holiday festivals, today the jubako would be perfect as storage box, as a serving piece, or simply as a magnificent art piece on its own. In excellent antique condition withminor scattered surface wear commensurate with age. We note some wear to the corners, however nothing that takes away from the overallsuperb nature of the piece. Must have been carefully appreciated by its owners forapproximately 150 years. A rare treasure.

Measures approximately 14\" high and 9\" wide. Would have graced the home of a Japanese family in the early to mid 1800s. Today, would make an exquisite storage box and conversation piece for office, studio, or dresser top. Very tasteful, drawing attention from all the way across the room. A unique and skillfully crafted work of art, and an outstanding centerpiece for the discriminating connoisseur of world class Japanese antiques.

The process of creating suchpieces from hand lacquered wood required the talents of one or more highly skilled artisans as well as a considerable investment in time. It wasnecessary to carefully dry the wood for an entire year before being shaped. Another year of drying may have then been needed before the lacquer finish could be applied. The lacquer work would then require time to complete as multiple coats were applied and each coat must dry completely in a carefully controlled atmosphere before proceeding. An entire piece of fine Japanese lacquer ware such as this onewould have taken severalmonths to complete.
