Antique Japapnese doll - Mitsuore Ningyo
RARE
Meiji 1868 - 1912 or possibly the late Edo period (1603 to 1868)
10.125 inches or 26cm.
I dislike using the word rare as it is often used in ads
when the doll is 25 years old and 1500 were produced.
**This doll is rare.**
Museum Quality DollThis is an old mitsuore ningyo (triple jointed doll) from either the Meiji or Edo period. Certainly over 100 years old and in very good condition. The body of the doll was made with the Ikkanbari method: In this method layers of washi (Japanese paper) were glued (lacquered) together over a wooden mold to form the shape of the body parts. It was then coated with layers of gofun, the mixture of ground oyster shells and animal glue. The eyes of the doll (glass) are painted from the inside, the arms can be shaped to a certain extent and all the joints, including the neck and hands are in good condition. The hands and feet are made of clay-like material. The amazing thing is that there is almost no damage to this 100 + year old doll. Question as to why it might be Edo period: Some Gosho ningyo from the late Edo period were made with this same technique. This type of doll was almost completely replaced later by toso (mixture of saw dust with glue). The kimono that this doll is wearing is made from silk (not cotton as it appears to be in the photos.) I purchased this doll from Kyoko of Asian Art in California. Kyoko had made some repairs to the Kimono. This is what she told me; The Kimono looks in good condition but it is very old and you can see holes caused by aging - NOT BAG WORMS. Bag Worms do lots of damage in Japan and you must always be careful to not purchase a doll infected with bag worms. The inner Liner (covers only the lower half) was replaced with old ohshima tsumugi silk. The Obi is newly made from old soft silk. All has been hand sewn. His hair is made of silk and some repair was made to one section of the hair. The doll is about 10 inches tall.Much of this information above was given to me by Kyoko of Asian Art from whom I purchased this doll.
A few of the photos belong to Kyoko and I have noted that on the photos. All items come from a smoke free home
