Wonderful Large 19th / 20th Century French Glazed Earthenware Chocolate Warmer. The warmer comprises a basin with copper insert and three jugs with covers. The long, heavy basin is decorated with brown, blue, and white hand painted Winter Scenes. One side features a lady carrying a basket and holding an umbrella. She is walking with a child on a path going home. The other side features a man and woman each holding canes. The woman is carrying sticks on her back. This couple is going to the opposite chalet in the scene. There are also several figures in the background. On each end of the basin is a lion\'s mask. The bottom part of the basin is a sky blue color with a ribbed shape. In the center of each side is a cartouche featuring a winter scene. The scenes are trimmed with a yellow band. The copper insert holds three covered jugs. Each jug has a copper spout with a metal extension that attaches the spout to the side of the jug. Under each spout is a lovely blue design. The rounded side of each jug is decorated with two winter scenes similar to the scenes on the basin. The covers are decorated with wooded landscape scenes. Each cover has a small hole necessary for when the warmer is used. The jugs are trimmed with the sky blue color. An extended yellow pottery band on the white bottom part holds each jug in place / in the copper insert. This yellow color also trims the rounded top rims of the jugs. The warmer is not marked.
SIZE: 11 3/4 inches high x 20 1/2 inches long x 8 1/2 inches wide.
CONDITION: The warmer has some wear with corrosion to the copper elements. One copper piece is lacking on the spout -- the slender metal piece that extends from the spout to the jug side. The warmer is in very nice condition.
RARE piece -- very decorative. This is a heavy piece. The basin is thick, heavy pottery. The warmer weighs 21 pounds. I added 4 pounds for packing material -- this item will require a lot of packing material.
