William Buchan (1729–1805) was a Scottish physician who practiced in Edinburgh from 1766 to 1778 and then relocated his practice to London. His \"Domestic Medicine\" was first issued in 1769. The work became very popular, showing up in Philadelphia by 1800 and in varying editions through the first part of the 19th century. This edition includes an appendix with recipes for a wide variety of concoctions and remedies - among the ingredients are hemlock, mercury, opium, turpentine, etc.Significant portions of this would certainly be classified as quackery today. As an example, consider the following Epilepsy treatment:\"Electuary for the Epilepsy - Take of Peruvian bark, in powder, an ounce; of powdered tin, and wild valerian-root, each half an ounce; simple syrup, enough to make an electuary .... I have added the powdered tin, because the epilepsy often proceeds from worms\"
This edition also contains 12 anatomical illustrations, each plate printed on one side of page only. Each with numbers and letters and accompanying text to identify various parts of the body and skeleton.
