Hippolyte Blot (1822-1888) was a French obstetrician who trained at the famous Le Maternite hospital in Paris. He was the author of many books on women\'s medicine and he designed and developed the arrow-like perforator. Thisobstetrical instrument was often used in life-or-death situations by doctors performing delivery in the early days of obstetrics.Without the use of modern medicines and advanced surgical instruments of today, there were limited options in obstetrical emergencies and both fetal and maternal mortality were high. This instrument was used in emergency cases when there was \'cephalopelvic disproportion\' and the patient\'s life was in jeopardy.The distal tip of the instrument has a flattened arrow head shape and was used with a scissor-like action. The proximal end has a spring handle and curved depressor, which allows for a reverse scissor-like action. The handle has a steel spring in its resting position which keeps the blades closed during use. When pressure is applied to the handle, the blades open and allow further widening action.This instrument is a rare addition for an astute medical collector and would make a great gift item.
