Hi Everyone, Thank you very much for both your time and consideration, I most certainly appreciate it. Firstly, I would like to strongly urge you to watch the video I posted on you tube, I highly recommendyou take a few minutes of your valuable time to watch the video as i believe it will answer any and all questions you may have pertaining to the condition of the box itself. It is very informative and forthcoming as far as the condition of the box and most importantly, it gives you an audible example of exactly what you may be considering to purchase, trust me, it\'s well worth your time. Just copy and paste the link into your browser and enjoy. Secondly, I just realized that for the sake and purpose of the video I shot, I took the liberty of removing the zither attachment above the comb so you all can get a better look at the condition of the comb itself, teeth,tips, etc. I do in fact have the zither attachment minus the felt covered tube, it is mia but, it seems to be if working order, friction lever, it easily moves up and down to either apply or back off the zither from the comb. If you would like to see a pic of it, just reach out and I\'ll send you a pic of it.
I could sit here and type all day long with a description but, it won\'t be as informative as the video, this box was mfg by a firm or music box maker by the name of Mermod Freres, a very reputable music box maker in the 19th and early 20th century. They are well known as a very innovative and clever maker with patented designs that at the time really improved upon the sound clarity and functionality of music boxes of the time. The Jacots safety parachute check which prevented the loss of control of the mainspring which powers the movement and preventing a catastrophic \"run\" which usually turns out to be fatal as the repair and restoration costs would far exceed the value of the box itself after suffering a tragedy like that. It may, the \"Jacot\'s\" safety check, in fact, be a contributing factor as to why it is still around and we are able to enjoy it to this very day. Jacot\'s was the name of the retailer who did quite a lot of business with Mermod Freres and that is the reason \"Jacot\'s\" name was used on the pendant, i guess, it\'s a way for \"Jacot\'s\" to put there stamp on it and maybe pass it off as their own, or not a bad idea to advertise your business as well, very smart.
The Thumper of a mainspring barrel which houses two opposing mainsprings which greatly increased the playing time and duration of the box. At that time, 1890, a box like this would have been the main form of entertainment in your home when you had family or friends over and I\'m sure the longer playing duration which alleviated or relieved the man or woman of the house from being preoccupied with constantly winding the mechanism i\'m sure. Remember, 1890, no TV, no telephones, and for god\'s sake, NO CELLPHONES, no electricity, well, maybe if you were Thomas Edison or Nikola Tesla you had it, otherwise, candlelight or kerosene lamp was what you used.
Also, the horizontal governor which allowed more precise control of the release or power transmitted from the mainspring to the mechanism for a perfect speed or tempo. The box plays 10 different melodies which can be repeated or allowed to automatically change from one melody to the next with the throw of just a lever. It\'s condition is very good to excellent needing just a handful of concerns needing to be addressed. The winning buyer can certainly play and enjoy the box as is but, I would strongly recommendor urge the winning buyer to put it in the hands of a professional to perfect it and give it a once over just to be sure it is safe to operate, this box deserves the respect and attention in my humbleopinion. Please watch the video, I suspect you may enjoy it even if you don\'t plan on participating in the sale. It is only missing one wire damper at the very far end of the bass side of the comb and a couple feather dampers near the treble end. The box sounds off with very good tone and clarity with just a couple imperfections in the entire register due to the aforementioned missing dampers, just a couple, nothing to concerning or distracting.
