This sale is for a Fine Antique Miniature Nude Painting.
The Painting, which measures approximately 2 1/4 inches across, is in Very Good Condition with the only damage being around the outer edge, caused by and underneath the cover rim of the a painting - still visible when properly assembled, but not very obvious.
The painting, although unsigned, is of a very good quality with nice detail.
The image is painted directly on to the back of the holder, with a slightgroove cut around the perimeter so as to allow the painting to fit into the sides of the surround or rim which also holds the glass cover - the top edge of this cover has thread grooves cut indicating that there was originally another cover over the glass - likely of the same material as the rest of the item, but this piece has long since gone missing as is evidenced by the veryfine scratches to the glass cover (the cover is indeed glass and not plastic).
As this sort ofsubject matterwould likelydepict contemporary images ofclothing and hair style, I suspect this painting is circalate 18th century - but I can\'t guarantee that.
I am sure this miniature was never meant to beplaced on display, but rather would have mostly likely have been carried discreetly in the vest pocket of some well to do gentleman? to show his friends - a most unusual piece.
