We have made the emotional decision to part ways with this beautiful model ship, which has been in our family for decades. We are growing older, downsizing our home and moving into a retirement community. This was a centerpiece of our living room for many years and now we just want to make sure it goes to an appreciative owner. This ship model can be displayed either residentially or commmercially, in museums, offices or homes. It will certainly serve as the center of attention in any Environment.
This model appears to have been built about 1860. It was originally the property of the Norwegian consul in Boston and has been continuously the property of his descendants. It represents a small merchant brigantine of the mid-19th century. The model shows Scandinavian influence and may represent a Norwegian-built or perhaps a ship built in the USA by Norwegians.
The model is fully rigged, without sails, with a carved, hollowed hull. The rigging is very complete and accurate. The model appears to be of the \"sailor-built\" type, but the quality of workmanship is much superior to most such models. The quality of the metal work is particularly notable, e.g. working pumps, steering machine and windlass of jeweler-like finish.
The model was repaired and restored in 1989 by a renown ship builder. It was cleaned, damaged wood work repaired, repainted in original colors and re-rigged, replicating the original work. The estimated value of the model is $15,000. Independent appraisal available upon request.
Scale and measurements: Hull measures 39\" L x 11 1/4 \" W x 9 1/2\" H. Overall 62\" L x 21\" W x 49\" H.
