Here is a piece of Americana from the turn-of-the-20th-century. The exact name of the manufacturer cannot be located, but this solid oak phone is similar, if not exactly like, the phones that were once installed in exclusive hotels of the early 1900\'s. In fact, that may be exactly where this phone was originally installed before ending up in its final location (an Ohio State University dormitory). I believe this because barely legible on the wiring schematic on the inside of the door states \"Wiring Of Comm. Batt. Hotel Set\". However, I know for a fact that this phone was from an early switchboard phone system installed in 1938 in the Baker Hall dormitory at Ohio State University. The working system remained in the dorm rooms until the early 1970\'s when it was replaced by a more modern automated Centrex system.
Aside from years of dust, the phone is in incredibly great condition and probably still in perfect working condition. The wall base of the solid oak box measures 8 1/2\" in height and 6 1/2\" in width. The entire \"working guts\" of the phone are in place and complete. The mouthpiece and ear piece are solid and not damaged. On the back of the mouthpiece is stamped \"Pat\'d Nov 26, 1901, Marc 19, 1907, April 14, 1908.\" The ear piece wire looks perfect with no fraying orsimilar damages.
