Antique Oscar Gutherz Limoges Rectangular Covered Dish, circa early 1880\'s:
$175.00

This item is an antique Oscar Gutherz Limoges Rectangular Covered Dish, circa early 1880\'s.Made of white porcelain ware, this lovely dish is hand decorated over transfer. The only mark shown on the dish is the Oscar Gutherz round red over-glaze decorator\'s mark. The dish measures 12 1/4\" long (including handles) and 7 1/4\" wide. The opening is 9 1/2\" x 6 3/8\". The dish and lid measure 5 1/2\" tall to the top of the handle, and the dish itself is 3\" deep (without the lid).Since the day this dish was manufactured over 130 years ago until now, it does not appear this dish has seen one day of service. There are no utensil marks or scratches on the interior bottom of the dish. There is a flea size chip on the underside of the lid and on the base, and several small black spots on the dish. There are some gold trim worn spots from lifting and putting back the lid for show and tell for well over hundred years where the lid sits on the bowl.I have highlighted the largest black spot and chip located on the dish. Please see photo\'s for details. These are extremely minor blemishes for such a rare and aged piece of porcelain.Oscar Gutherz (1856-1935) was an Austrian porcelain decorator who was active in Limoges, France between 1880 and 1884.During his brief time in Limoges he mainly worked for J.P.L. Limoges, but occasionally did work for other porcelain manufacturers. He then returned to Austria and established a porcelain decorating studio in Bohemia in 1885.By the late 1890\'s he had established the Royal Austrian Porcelain Co. with his brother, Edgar. This covered dish with some unique features displays Herr Gutherz\'s early attempts at non-traditional decorating techniques. One of the most interesting facets of the dish is the crenelated dish handles and lid cover.First painted in gold, then enhanced with short brushstrokes in a rich matte reddish-brown finish, the handles give the impression of crumpled satin bows.Another unique touch added to this dish are the diamond shaped grids embossed on all four corners of the lid and the bowl. You can see how the pattern gives the lid the texture of a padded cushion.I get the feeling that Mr. Gutherz was designing this dish to resemble a type of gift box that may have been popular in France at the time. For over 130 years this lovely dish has owned a prime spot in a china display cabinet, never doing more than sitting around looking pretty!Amazingly, the glaze still shines like the dish was made yesterday.I believe it shows the great care and pride placed on this dish by its previous owners. Thanks to their keen guardianship, we still have this trophy piece of Limoges porcelain in pristine condition. This lovely Oscar Gutherz Limoges rectangular covered dish would compliment any array of fine china and collectables!
