Antique rarest genuine *not \"style\"* Sevres Pair of Painted Mycene Vases by Carrier-Belleuse Ormolu 1880 12\"Original Palais-Royal tagsSelected Antiques from Paris to your Door
A short foreword about the Sèvres products :There are so much \"Sevres like\" porcelain items on and everywhere that people get a false image of the genuine Sèvres production : the famous manufacture, as well as Meissen in Germany only makes highest quality products. Sèvres even doesn\'t offer \"second choice\" (zweite Wahl) products. If they do not meet the Factory quality standards (perfection), they are just off. Porcelain, decoration, painting, even gilt bronze mounts must be at best. The Sèvres production is one of the most widely copied worldwide since centuries. Wrong interlaced double L marks with fantasy signs (a LL with \"S\" signs the genius copyist Edme Samson who made first class products recreated from all the best european and oriental manufactures), Sèvres with a letter given as 18th century for poor copies of the end of the 19th century… Too bad. Sèvres style or \"-like\" is honest but definitely not Sèvres or Sèvres worth (except very few extremely high quality objects made in England – Minton –, by Samson or even the rare russian production of St. Petersburg) : a Sèvres mark is not Sèvres. The Royal, then Imperial, then National factory always marked in a very clear and generally easy to identify way. The right marks are public and easy to find. Unlike Meissen, for example, the national Factory doesn\'t protect jealously her copyright : a \"Sèvres\" speaks for itself. You do not need to be a lawyer to admire it. Once you have been to a museum (hundreds of Museums in the world show true Sèvres porcelain) or to a good antiques exhibition or shop, you aren\'t going to mix up right and wrong Sèvres anymore.A true Sèvres isn\'t cheap or too expensive for a common piece : a true Sèvres is just high quality with a higher price than less qualitative pieces…
EXCEPTIONAL VASESThis outstanding and impressive pair of totally intact, quite large and heavy Mycene vases was made, excellently painted with Watteau Louis XVI scenes, and gilt in the Sèvres Factory near Paris in 1880. It was probably sold that year too to a wealthy foreign client in a luxury shop of the Palais-Royal in Paris. The original tags of the famous Boutigny shop are still stuck under the base…!
PORCELAIN and SHAPEThe famous \'Mycene\" (\"de Mycènes\") vase (from the greek city\'s name) is one of the models created by the celebrated sculptor Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) a friend of Auguste Rodin, then artistic director of the Sèvres factory (1875-1887).He made his first drawings in 1880, so that this pair, dated from March 1880, is probably one of the first ever produced after Carrier-Belleuse later famous model. The Mycene vase had no lid.Thirty years earlier, Carrier-Belleuse had the same leading role for renewing and modernizing the shapes and decoration catalogue in Stoke-on-Trent at the Minton factory (1851-1855).The shape of this vase belongs to the new designs of Carrier-Belleuse which were much acclaimed at the 1884 exhibition of the Arts Décoratifs. Inspired by the Antiquity as well as by the Renaissance, like most of Carrier-Belleuse works, it is still near to the classical Sèvres forms (Campana vases) but slimmer and only apparently more simple.
PAINTINGSThe vases show two classical Louis XVI Watteau \"courting\" scenes in reserves with a shepherd and a young peasant woman in idyllic natural landscapes. \"Back to nature\" was the keyword after Jean-Jacques Rousseau, also for Queen Marie-Antoinette who got her \"true\" farmyard in the Versailles park. The scenes are very delicate and graceful with soft tones and fine colorful accents in lilac and turquoise. The background is light chocolate or chestnut.Pure gold lines in bright (agate polished) and matt gold, extensive geometrical and foliate patterns adorn the painted reserves and the reverse of the vases with dragon heads within a large Empire style leaves pattern.
ORMOLUThe ormolu bases are beautiful, heavy mercury gilt and quite exceptional, each made of two parts with laurel wreath and small pearls. The mount to the vases is perfect and even the sealing is still the original one.
PALAIS-ROYALG. Boutigny was in the second half of the 19th century a very famous porcelain shop where European aristocrats (including the extremely wealthy russian families) and rich families used to let produce porcelain with their coat of arms. Boutigny had two shops in the Palais-Royal, galerie Montpensier and galerie de Chartres. Elite ceramics offered on the market nowadays still have often their Boutigny tag. The Palais-Royal origin is a seal that people always enjoyed and transmitted proudly. The two tags, one partly torn, are present.
FULLY AND DULY MARKED SEVRESFor both vases :Rectangular porcelain rounded stamp in green \"S. 80\" for 1880. Circular stamp in red for gilding \"Doré à Sèvres RF 80\" (capital letters) for 1880.Gilder or painter mark in gold : 2 initials (. Z?) between dots, \"Sèvres\" cursive hand written.Incised in the paste \"80 3\" for March 1880.
CONDITIONThe pair is nearly perfect according to its respectable age. Very slight rubbing to the gold (a lacking spot of 4 mm in the bunch of leaves of the back on one vase, see picture), two very tiny scratches to the porcelain, minor losses of gilding on the bronze. No chip, line or crack (one circular fire line inside, within the top rim of one vase. This is not perceptible under regular circumstances, please check picture).
A great highest quality antique piece of art for a refined decoration or a particular collection looking for historical perfection.
