ANTIQUE POLYNESIAN/HAWAIIAN/CARIBBEAN FOLK ART COCONUT HEAD CARVING WITH FREE DISPLAY STANDThis RARE piece measures 6” x 6” x 6 3/4” and it has lite blue and white painted SCALLOP SHELL eyes with white painted circles on the cheeks and three lower teeth. It\'s crudely done as a tribal folk art should be and this is not a typical “coconut head” tourist piece. It\'s in good condition for its age with normal toning/patina and some wood splitting throughout (mainly top-center and top-left next to left eye)...please see photos for condition. Wood splitting is normal on antique/old carved coconut sculptures. There\'s two old screw holes on the back so at one time this piece was mounted on a wall or pillar. The center is dug out with about a 3” opening to perhaps hold something and the interior bottom has a 1/4” hole to stick something inside it (don\'t know what would go inside this unusual coconut head). The “angry and gruesome” facial expression alludes to a guardian figure and the blue scallop shell eyes allude to the ocean/swimming pool or a blue-eyed European. The white painted circles with lite blue lines on the cheeks alludes to European facial rouge or perhaps tattoos. This piece could either be a guardian figure or a creative mockery of Europeans/Americans who invaded and appropriated Polynesia/Hawaii/the Caribbean. You can use the included used acrylic stand (minor scratches) for display or mount it on a wall or pillar. I estimate this piece to be from the early-mid 20th century. This RARE coconut head sculpture would work nicely in a Tiki bar, patio/sunroom, cabana, outside swimming pool area, seafood restaurant, kitchen or ethnographic/Oceanic art collection.The shipping cost anywhere in the U.S. includes packing materials, handling, online tracking and insurance.
