DESCRIPTION

Beautiful hand painted plate with an image of two rabbits or hares. Gilt trimmed with cutout corner shell decorations. Marks read \"PAT\'D APRIL 2D 1889 / ELITE / SM / LIMOGES.

The Bawo & Dotter company of New York established the SM (for St. Martial, the first bishop of Limoges) manufacturing facility in Limoges, France, called Elite Works. That factory began producing porcelain in 1892 with the mark “Elite France” and later “Elite Works France.” Interestingly, this piece carries a patent date of 1889, three years before the company opened production. That would indicate that the patent was already in the company\'s possession, making this one of the earliest Bawo & Dotter patterns.

CONDITION

Overall excellent. No chips, dings or cracks. Some wear to the gilt edge trim (visible in the images). A FINE AND RARE PIECE OF EARLY BAWO & DOTTER LIMOGES DINNERWARE.
