ANTIQUE 1800\'S SILVER PLATED BUD VASE OR VESSEL BY JAMES W. TUFTS

James Walker Tufts (11 Feb 1835, Charlestown MA - 3 Feb 1902, Pinehurst, Caldwell, NC), when in his teens, became an apprentice in an

apothecary store in his native town. At the age of 21, Mr. Turf went into business for himself in Somersville. Some years later he also bought a pharmacy in Medford, Mass, where he conceived the idea of making soda water apparatus. He did it merely for his own use but it grew into business of wide expansion and importance. He gave up his interest in drug business and in the 60\'s established his another one of making soda machines in Boston. In 1891 Turf combined with other firm to form the American Soda Fountain Company and he became its president.
As his company was producing silverplated parts for soda fountains he eventually started to make silver plated pitchers, dishes and other hollowware. He withdrew from the business due to ill health; the firm closed in 1915.

The featured items represents a silver plated(most likely quadruple plated) bud/spill vase or possible some kind of drinking vessel. It measures approximately 6\" tall, 2 1/2\" in diameter at the bottom and a bit less 1 1/2\" at the opening.

The piece features a flat round base, short tapered stem and long body with etched pattern and banding. The bottom is markedwith letter \"T\" in the center of a circle in a four point star. This hallmark belonged to James W. Tufts but it usually had other writings around it, like pattern numbers, quadruple plate and others. Actually, I could not find even a single other example with just the letter and the star.

The item comes in overall good condition for its age. Patina and tarnishing. Some area are quite darkened and appear to be thought to clean. Some dents at the base rim and the opening. Scratches and dings.

Thefeatured antique silver plated bud vase will make a great addition to any collection. It will be a nice display for a vintage or antique room!
