1850\'S

ENGLISH WHITE IRONSTONE PLATTER

LEAF AND CROSSSED RIBBON SHAPE

The early pieces of English white ironstone are becomingextremely difficult to find, and this platter is an example of a very earlypiece. This very early platter has a potter\'s mark, which I\'ve pictured but themark is difficult to read. But this pattern was made by only one potter,Livesley & Powell and was made ca. 1851.

The embossed pattern is Leaf and Crossed Ribbon and thisshape is shown on p. 113 of Jean Wetherbee\'s \"White Ironstone: ACollector\'s Guide\". T is an embossed band around the wide rim of theplatter which consists of a looped ribbon with leafs draped over the ribbon.

The platter is a very large size, and has undoubtedly gracedmany holiday tables for over150 years. If this platter could talk, we\'d alllearn a first hand lesson about history! The platter is approx. 18 1/2\"long and 13 1/4\" wide. There are no chips, cracks, or crazing. There issome expected utensil usage evident on the face and some specks of kiln dust inthe glaze and minor imperfections which are original to the potting and firing. On the rim edge there are three marks which is where the platter was held in the kiln during thefiring.
