Antique Rare Devil Imp Brass Hand Nut Nutcracker Peerage England 100 Year War:
$150.00

Antique Rare Devil Imp Brass Hand Nut Nutcracker Peerage England 100 year War. Quite Eerie looking. Measures about 5.5\" long. Well made solid cast brass. Great looking and well functioning too. I originally thought that this was a monkey or chimpanzee has a really eerie look to it. I soon found out from other ers that it was actually a devil. This item is actually so worn from use that the coat of arms that was on either side has been worn off. There are no markings on this item.
One er tells me\"at the bottom is the English and the French coat of arms, its the Catholic Church having a go at the English King over the war of the roses, the church told him he had no legit claim to the french throne\".
Another tells me this:\"What you have is an English brass nutcracker in form of the Lincoln Imp. There should be a Coat of Arms of Lincoln Cathedral and Lincolnshire. It dates from about 1912.The actual Lincoln Imp is located high on a pillar in the Angel Choir in Lincoln Cathedral. Legend says that Satan sent the imp to Lincoln Cathedral to cause trouble. The imp was destroying the Angel Choir when an angel appeared but the imp jumped up onto a pillar and started throwing rocks at the angel. The angel then turned the imp to stone as he is today.\"
And yet more information from the community: Actually the war of the roses is wrong, it was Henry 5th who tried to take the french throne by force, he claimed he had a right because his mother was from french royalty. The catholic church were the ones to call him a devil and said he was an imposter to both the english and frence thrones, ended up in the 100 year war which started in 1330s. Theres a book about it all called \"Crispins Day, The Glory of Agincourt\" Auther Rosmary hawley Jarman, Pudlishers Collins.
A great item for a collection of Devils, monkeys, chimpanzees or apes as well as nutcrackers and brass collections and also collectors of English metalware and people who collect items with history recalling the War of the roses.
