RCA 106 LOUDSPEAKER Antique c.1925 Radio THEREMIN TAPESTRY RADIOLA COIL SPEAKER

An antique RCA 106 Tapestry Speaker in exceptional condition.

I am pleased to present this rareRCA106 Tapestry Speaker for your consideration. These were used with earlyThereminsets during the mid-1920\'s and are difficult to find a clean unit.

The unit measures 34 inches high, 24 inches wide, and 10-3/4 inches deep, weighing about 40 pounds. It is serial number127019(see close up picture of product plate).

The cabinet shows some wear. Occasional bumps and scratches are seen in the wood, but it shows significantly less wear than the typical unit (all pictures show the actual Speaker you will receive). The Tapestry shows some light stains, and has a few tears. The interior is dusty.

I HAVE NO IDEA OF THE CONDITION OR IF THE SPEAKER WORKS SELLING AS IS

I do not have any compatible equipment to test the unit with, and it is offered untested and in as-is condition.

This is a rareRCATapestry Speaker in exceptional condition. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection.

Shipping Note: Due to the size and weight of this item, I am adding a $25.00 charge (unless full price is paid) to have the Speaker professionally packaged and insured for safe arrival at your location.

You are welcome to pick the unit up in Phoenix,Az to avoid any shipping charges.

International shipping is possible.

RCA Radiola 106 Speaker
Dynamic Field Coil Power Supply

This is a suggestion for driving the electro-dynamic coil so there is no 60/120 hz hum

Input from another engineer on a good approach is welcomed...
.

My Experiment: I will observe the voltage ripple on an oscilloscope using a 473 ohm 50 Watt load resistor in place of the 106 speaker. The before measurement will be like a stock 106 and after is with the multiple 100uf filter capacitors applied as seen in the graphic below.

HelloSeoul, So. Korea. I am happy someone on planet earth finds my current project interesting. I had to order another transformer through Amazon which has isolation 115vac to 115vac for $20, the original one I bought ($45) doubled the voltage but ended up not being isolated primary to secondary, dangerous! Still need a few weeks to iron out the details. Thank you for visiting.

The Uncle mentioned using a capacitor across the field coil terminals mounted after the old disk rectifier full wave bridge.A good value to try is anelectrolytic 220uf @ 250 volts. Observe the proper capacitor polarity across the two bottom screws on the two rectifiers. I expand with a similar approach but using an isolated external add-on power supply.

The finished enclosed size is 9\" x 4\" x 4\"

R1 & R2 will be finalized for value after practical hands on experimenting based upon an isolated 115 vac RMS.

After relentlessly searching all sources, finding the only\"available parts\"guided the design

I will list all the parts and their source if anyone shows interest.. Mouser & AmazonFinding a cost effective transformer was difficult. The total parts including a 35-watt transformer is around$100With no-load,LEDOn indicates a dc shock hazard at Term-2, the charge bled off of C1 & C2 & C3 LED is off. R3 is backup!C1 & C2 & C3 might be reduced or doubled up on, something construction and bench testing would verify.Photo taken by Jasonof Theremin World. RCA\'s that use the105 speakerwith a dynamic coil, use the field coil as part of the power supply filtering which needs more explanation than I will give. Find Info Here

Unplug everything from power, wait 5 minutes before touching any connections!

Take the Hum Free dc power supply output leads and connect to the two screw terminals in the center of each rectifier(looks like big coil in graphic)indicated below as110 Volts A.C. The direction of hook-up does not matter, only in this situation.

There is a voltage drop across the rectifier, check for 80 volts dc across the bottom two screws on the rectifiers.

It might be better to bypass the two rectifiers byremoving the brown wireson the bottom screws. Use these wires tied to the Hum Free wires from Term-2 for a direct connection to the field coil. Then check for 80 volts at term-2. The Hum Free power supply output can be shorted briefly without damage. Things will spark and warm up. * The isolation transformer is designed to shut down temporarily if overheated. *

This above connection explanations need validation

The RCA LOUDSPEAKER 106 has a DC model, which is similar to the AC model.

Before making internal connections unplug the Power Supply from power, wait 5 minutes so energy stored in the capacitors has a chance to discharge!

This is an experimental design in development, build and use at your own risk.

TheRCA LOUDSPEAKER 106is an electro-dynamic 8\" speaker mounted into a cabinet that also contains a tubeless power supply used to generate the DC voltage required for the field coil of the speaker. The power supply consists of a full wave disk rectifier and Qty(2) 0.1uF capacitors. The dry disk rectifiers are mounted on the speaker. An output transformer is also mounted on the speaker, which reduces the high input impedance down to a lower impedance needed to drive the speaker. The cable from the output transformer inputs has phone tips used to connect to the output of the receiver.

A recepticle is provided on the rear of the cabinet and can be used to supply AC power to the receiver that is used in conjunction with the speaker. A power switch is mounted on the cabinet, with the switch controlling both the speaker power supply and the AC recepticle.

The loudspeaker is similar to the ones used in Radiola\'s 62 and 64.

The LOUDSPEAKER 106 also has aDC model, which is similar to the AC model except has a higher field coil resistance and also does not have the power supply.

The output voltage from the power supply should be about 80VDC with the field coil connected and about 95VDC with the field coil disconnected. The operation of the disk rectifiers depends on the pressure which the disks are held. Slightly tightening the pressure on the disks may improve a low voltage reading from the power supply.

Note that the schematic in Riders shows both the tubeless type LOUDSPEAKER 106 and also the Speaker/amplifier combination LOUDSPEAKER 105. These are two distinct loudspeaker models.
