Antique Reliquary 1700’s French Tinsel Painting Rolled Paper Filigree Quill Work:
This intricate (as is) middle to late 1700’s French reliquary shadowbox boasts a hand carved wood, gesso and gilt frame 17 ¼” x 15” x 3” deep with 12 ½” x 10 ½” reveal and creates an architectural chapel shrine using gleaming gilt tinsel paper, scrolls of rolled paper or filigree quill work, glazes and turned steer bone “candlesticks”, hand written labels and original miniature watercolor paintings of Saint Anthony of Padua and Jesus Christ on the cross. This is truly a triumph of cloister art and represents hundreds of hours of communal labor. The frame shows wear and old repairs to the original gilt surface of the foliate carved neoclassical frame, though much original surface remains. You will note old (inactive) insect damage to the wood and several of the precious bits inside are loose, have come loose or torn. You must enjoy the beauty of the piece as it appears, or open it up for restoration. PLEASE NOTE: because of its age, more pieces may come loose JUST from the vibrations of shipping SO PLAN on doing restoration. The back bears old red wax seals connected by string: I cannot make out the imagery on the seals. WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO SHIP WORLDWIDE IF ALLOWED BY USPS.
