THE BOYS OF \'76. A History of the Battles of the Revolution. By Charles Carleton Coffin. Published in 1876 by Harper & Brothers, New York. 9\" x 7\" decorated cloth hardcover, embossed with gilt design. Illustrated with engravings. 398 pages.

CONDITION: GOOD ANTIQUE CONDITION. Handsome exterior as shown wuth some wear at corners and spine ends. Binding firm. Text is clean and complete. No torn, loose or missing pages. Good example of this rare 138-year-old Revolutionary War title.

DESCRIPTION:

This is a history of the important battles of the Revolutionary War. Written to appeal to a younger audience, author Charles Carleton Coffin describes the historic events through the eyes of Elijah Favor of Ryefield, New Hampshire, a 16-year-old who takes up arms after hearing about the British attack on Concord. Elijah Favor is fictional, but he serves as a literary device that allows the author to introduce chapter after chapter of historical fact including detailed descriptions of important battles, profiles of the military leaders involved, and much more. All illustrated with dozens upon dozens of old time engravings.

In the Preface, the author writes:

The story of the American Revolution -- what our fathers accomplished, their hardships, heroism, and self-denial, in securing the independence of the country and in advancing liberty and happiness throughout the world -- will have an interest and charm of its own so long as the desire for freedom exists in the hearts of men.

In this volume an attempt has been made to give a concise, plain, and authentic narrative of the principle battles of the Revolution as witnessed by those who took part in them.

Although the name of Elijah Favor may not be found on the Ryefield muster roll, yet we have more than his counterpart in the person of Alexander Scammell, who fought at Bunker Hill, became Washington\'s trusted adjutant-general, and who gave his life to his country at Yorktown ...

One hundred years have passed since \"the Boys of \'76\" shouldered their muskets and fought for their liberties. The sufferings, hardships, hatreds and barbarities of that struggle, all have passed away, and Americans and Britons are brothers; but the story of the struggle -- the patriotism, self-denial and devotion -- will never be forgotten. That a perusal of these pages may deepen the love of the boys of the present generation for their country, and quicken their love for liberty and the rights of man, is the earnest hope of the author.

The book, which I hope you\'ll read regardless of age, has an effect that its author probably never considered -- it shows us how Americans of 1876 still recognized and respected the immense debt we owe to the men and women of the American Revolution, an appreciation that is sadly all but lost today.

One of the shining assets of this book is its treasure trove of historic illustrations. It would probably take you years to track down all these images on your own, yet here they are in a single volume. More than 300 in all -- scenes of battle, portraits of Washington and his officers, sites of historical significance, period vignettes, maps and more. All rendered in a classic 19th-century style that imparts a real sense of the era. One of the most touching is a simple illustration of a soldier\'s mother sitting alone by the kitchen hearth, gazing into the flames, an expression of solemn repose on her face as she waits for her son to return from the battlefield. The caption reads: Never again will she hear the footsteps of her boy ...
