I am offering the last remaining pieces of an assorted lot of mid-19th century leather working hand tools from a Saddlers shop I acquired over 40 years ago. I had recently came across these leather working tools and accessories while going through my storage boxes. Until I rediscovered these boxes, I had not seen these tools in over 30 years. As they say, I was in the right place at the right time when I was recruited to help a family clean out their great grandfather’s estate. Their family’s ancestors owned and operated a Saddlers shop where they produced finely crafted saddles, tack and harness. Inasmuch, the family had a large amount of leather working and blacksmith tools dating back from the mid to late 1800’s. I was told I could have whatever pieces interested me so I gathered a small collection of antique saddler leather working hand tools and several antique blacksmith iron working tools. These pieces have been in my possession ever since. For a short time during the mid-1970’s I took an interest in leather working and actually used these tools on the pieces I made. Today, I am in the process of divesting myself of a lifetime of collections to include this last remaining tool from a beautiful collection of antique Saddlers hand tools and related accessories I have already listed and sold. I have tried my very best to accurately identify each piece and provide as detailed description as I am able. Please, if I have misidentified a tool or piece it is not done so with the intention of misrepresenting the item, it’s simply a result of my ignorance of the leather working craft and profession. To that end, if there is an error in my description, please let me know the mistake and I will correct and revise the description ASAP. Please note; other than a light cleaning with a little “000” steel wool, all the tools and accessories are being sold as found in “AS IS” condition. This sale is for the single piece described below. All the hand tools and accessories in the collection are being offered individually and not as a single group. I do offer combined shipping costs for multiple purchases. For sale is this awesome looking, NAMED, genuine Saddlers, 1800’s period, iron, C.S. Osborne & Co., #8, “Rivet Setter” leather working hand tool. This heavy iron tool measures approximately 4 3/16” long from the flat bottom edge to the hammered top. The metal on the tool has an even toned gray patina finish. There is no rust currently present on this tool but the iron does show signs of having rust in the distant past before it was brushed and cleaned many years ago. Despite its obvious use and wear, this tool remains both functional and esthetically attractive for a period piece display. On one side the iron tool is stamped with the name “C.S. OSBORNE & CO.” in capital letters and the number size “8”. The opposite side of the tool is stamped with the name of the individual Saddler who originally owned this tool. Unfortunately, I cannot decipher all the letters in the name; however those letters I can identify appear to read as follows, “R. M. SA- - MIS”. This antique Saddlers hand tool is a remarkable piece of 19th century engineering and offers a brilliant example of a bygone era and skill craft. Overall, this is a very nice authentic antique Osborne & Co. Saddlers hand tool from the 1800’s.
