This is a very rare, fantastic wood carving of a \"Satyr\".

Satyr is The mythical Greek god of Shepherds, Flocks, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music.

The Romans took the same creature and called it \"Faun\".

This is a hard, solid piece of wood. A True example of a dying craftsmanship of wood carving and gorgeous artwork.

The face is on a V shaped, solid piece of wood with varying thicknesses up to 1 1/4 inch.

There are two hidden hooks on the back side of carving, I imagine as a secret hiding place for something now unknown.

Approximate dimensions:

Overall Height: 8 inches

Face height, bottom of beard to top of head, not including shelf: 7 1/4 inches.

Shelf: 3/4\" thick.

Shelf width at widest section: 10 inches

Face, across at widest section: 5 inches

I believe It is made of Walnut and is consistent with the Renaissance Revival/ Mannerist Styles that were so popular in France during the 3rd quarter of the 19th Cen.

The realism and detail is amazing. Pieces of this quality were only done for the wealthiest clients and are very hard to find today.

The satyr\'s head is life-like. He appears to have a very prominent Grecian nose, deep carved detailing for

His horns, beard, hair, and blank stare eyes, and prominent cheekbones.

The finish is in excellent condition.

There is age-appropriate wear very typical for pieces of this kind and definitely do not detract from the beauty or value of the piece!
