Antique Schuco 8.5\" Mechanical Yes/No Bellhop Monkey
Condition: Previously owned, in good antique condition. His uniform is missing the top black button and his cap is missing the black & red tassel. The stitching attaching his limbs need to be reinforced or replaced. There are several small apparently moth eaten holes in his boots, and there is some discoloration around his eyes. The head and tail mechanism is in tact and working.
Background:
The premier early German toy maker Schreyer und Co was founded in 1912 by businessman Heinrich Schreyer and toy developer Heinrich Müller in Nuremberg, Germany\'s toy capital. In 1921, the abbreviation Schuco became the company\'s official trademark. Heinrich Müller had begun developing ideas for toys at age 17 while working for Gebruder Bing, and during Schuco\'s early trendsetting years he registered numerous mechanical tin toy patents. His \"Pick Pick Bird\" toy design became the most popular toy of the time with over 20 million sold. The company\'s specialty eventually became tin, plastic, and diecast cars and trucks, and although it went bankrupt in 1976, the company was reorganized in 1993 and became totally independent again by 1996.In 1920, Schuco introduced the Yes-No Monkey, the first nonverbal \"talking\" toy that could nod its head yes or no with the help of a tail that controls mechanical head rotation. In an age of storytellers, many librarians, teachers, and parents loved to use the Yes-No Monkey to help tell stories. These fully jointed toys came in various colors and fun outfits, and they featured metal bodies covered with sawdust-stuffed mohair, felt hands and feet, and painted faces. Similar versions of the original patent were marketed in later years under names like Tricky Bears and Talisman animals.Description:
